Welcome Aboard!

Thank you so much for expressing interest in forming this reading club. I think one of the primary goals should be to develop a working body of knowledge of current topics, the major actors involved, an understanding of the long-standing historical underpinnings, and above all else to create a healthy sense of curiosity and humility (think “Bunker Roy”) to the numerous complexities that this world has to offer. For now, I am strongly recommending that we conduct ourselves and the opinons that we hold with the greatest tact and civility, because these are admirable qualties and can only foster the healthiest learning environment. And with that out of the way, Welcome Aboard!

Topic of the Week - Intelligence Quota

This remains a very hotly contested topic and one that has tremendous concern for all of us. Being branded as smart or otherwise can have such an adverse impact, especially on the young and impressionable. Is anything crueler than being told to sit still and be quiet when the teacher likes to hear the “smart” kid’s answers. Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If what I.Q. tests measure is immutable and innate,
what explains the Flynn effect—the steady rise in
scores across generations?
